Naval Crew Workload Monitoring and Visualization
نویسندگان
چکیده
Large, real-time systems such as Navy ships, nuclear power plants, airplanes, etc. require crews of human operators to control them. This paper documents the concept and design evolution of a visualization method for a crew workload-monitoring tool. Crew leaders and trainers, devisers of Navy tactics, techniques, and procedures, and human factors designers of crew-served systems can use this visualization to understand the effects of task reassignment on the effectiveness of crew workload division. This visualization enables the user to calculate aggregate workload as a user-defined, linear combination of numerous individual workload measurements all mapped to a common scale. This enables a unified view of diverse workload metrics and sensitivity analyses on the component metrics. Our original intent was to provide a visualization method for a real-time tool that would enable a crew leader to re-assign tasks in real-time, based on workload displays. However our pre-design interviews with subject matter experts and representatives of the potential user community indicated a greater need for visualization during crew training and system design activities to predict the quality of workload division during crisis situations (e.g., high contact density, threat condition, high sea states, and enclosed areas of operations).

Crews of human operators controlling large, real-time systems such as ships, airplanes, nuclear power plants, space missions, air traffic, etc., are typically assigned responsibilities according to doctrine, standard operating procedure, and training. This study prototypes a software system for monitoring and visualizing crew workload to provide leaders, trainers, doctrine writers, and interfac...
متن کامل"Task-Managed" Watchstanding: Providing Decision Support for Multi-Task Naval Operations
Watchstanding in shipboard command centers requires U.S. Navy crews to complete timecritical and externally paced task assignments in an accurate and timely manner. Requirements for optimized crew sizes in future ships are driving system designers toward human–computer interface designs that mitigate task and workload demands in a multi-task work environment. The multi-task mission is character...
متن کاملAdaptive Automation using an object-orientated task model
On naval ships the crew is assisted by a combat management system (CMS) in their assessment of the tactical situation around the ship and their subsequent actions. Today’s information-rich littoral environments force operators to divide attention between different information items. The risk of overload is imminent and the concept of adaptive automation can aid the operator. The first concept r...

In the near future, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) usage will expand into the Naval aircraft carrier operating environment. The new and different capabilities of these vehicles will likely introduce numerous potential changes in the nature of deck operations. The presence of UAVs and wireless data communications will enable centralized planning and control of la...

The choice of roll stabilization system is critical for many types of ships. For warships where operational activities are fast and the concept of time is very effective, determining the most appropriate of these systems is of particular importance. Some operations, such as the landing of the helicopter on board, are critical for naval ships. Unwanted rolling motion makes this difficult. In add...
